What are Outs? ‘Outs’ are the number of cards left that will make your hand. Use the maximum number of outs, this assumes that no other player has one of the cards that will make your hand. Examples Assume you have (9,J), any suit, and the flop shows (2,10,8). Here you have (8,9,10,J) or four to a straight. A seven (7) or a queen (Q) will make your hand. There are four sevens and four queens in the deck so you would have eight (8) outs to hit the straight. Assume you have (10H,7H) and the flop shows (9H,6S,4H). Here you have (10H,9H,7H,4H), so we need a Heart to make the flush. There are 13 hearts in the deck, minus the two in our hand, minus the two on the board which is nine(9) outs to make the flush. Assume you have (A,K) and the flop shows (6,J,10). Here we see that a Queen is the only card that will make the straight, so our outs are 4. The Odds of Making the Hand In example one or two above, we consider the deck of 52 cards, minus the two pocket cards, minus the three community cards which leaves 47 cards. In example one above, our odds to make the straight would be 8/47 or approximately 17. Use this 17 as the percent chance of making the straight on the next card. AS A QUICK TIP: Just use two times the number of outs. In example two above, our odds of making the flush on the next card are 9/47 or approximately 19%. AS A QUICK TIP: Just use two times the number of outs. In example three above, the odds of making our straight 4/47 or approximately 8%. AS A QUICK TIP: Just use two times the number of outs. This is just a quick tip for ‘after the flop’ calculation of card odds. We will have much more on odds to come in other strategy lessons.
